چکیده

INTRODUCTION: Given the lengthy scan times (~10-17 minutes), motion corruption is a significant source of error in high resolution magnetic resonance imaging of trabecular bone (TB) [1], as it leads to blurring of the TB microstructure and results in a loss of sensitivity and reproducibility of the structural parameters [2]. Submillimeter in–plane translational motion can be effectively detected using navigator-projections and subsequently corrected in the high resolution images [3]. To address the level of motion corruption acceptable for in vivo scans and establish a standard of optimized image quality in our clinical studies, a comprehensive image rating scheme employing a group of 4 raters was developed to characterize the degree of motion corruption within a given scan complementing other image quality metrics like signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the level of artifacts. We aimed to evaluate the robustness of the image evaluation with respect to translational motion corruption by applying several translational motion trajectories to a relatively motion-free high quality TB image. The mean scores (from 4 raters) for the level of motion corruption were compared to an objective image sharpness criterion chosen as the normalized gradient squared (NGS), and quantitative parameters of the TB microstructure. We hypothesized that the motion scores for images degraded by variable extents of in vivo and simulated motion would correlate with the computed NGS values [4]. Furthermore, this would permit us to establish a relationship between the motion scores and TB structural parameters in a manner so as to designate a cutoff score for motion beyond which the reliability of the structural parameters comes into question.

Mandibular Trabecular Bone Analysis Using Local Binary Pattern for Osteoporosis Diagnosis

Background: Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease characterized by low bone mineral density (BMD) and micro-architectural deterioration of bone tissue, leading to bone fragility and increased fracture risk. Since Panoramic image is a feasible and relatively routine imaging technique in dentistry; it could provide an opportunistic chance for screening osteoporosis. In this regard, numerous...

Quantitative MRI for the assessment of bone structure and function.

Osteoporosis is the most common degenerative disease in the elderly. It is characterized by low bone mass and structural deterioration of bone tissue, leading to morbidity and increased fracture risk in the hip, spine and wrist-all sites of predominantly trabecular bone. Bone densitometry, currently the standard methodology for diagnosis and treatment monitoring, has significant limitations in ...

A new method to predict structural parameters of trabecular bone at a standardized SNR level in high-resolution MRI studies of distal tibia

Introduction Structural parameters of trabecular bone quality—BV/TV, surface-to-curve-ratio, etc., computed at peripheral sites on the basis of high-resolution MR (μMR) images are known to be sensitive to signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In time series μMR studies to investigate temporal changes in bone’s micro-structure, images acquired at different time points can have variations in SNR as a resu...

تاثیر تمرینات تحمل وزن و مکمل کلسیم بر استخوان ترابیکولار و کورتیکال متافیز فوقانی درشت نی - یک مطالعه تجربی در موش های عقیم شده

Background and purpose: Osteoporotic fractures are much more common in older post-menopausal women and account for significant morbidity and mortality. Although age is an independent risk factor for fractures, bone micro-architecture is the predictor of subsequent fractures. Adequate calcium and Weight-bearing exercise are known to affect skeletal development, however, the effects of calcium su...

MRI-Arthroscopic Correlation in Rotator Cuff Tendon Pathologies; A Comparison between Various Centers

Background: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has long been considered a perfect imaging study for evaluation of shoulder pathologies despite occasional discrepancies between MR reports and arthroscopic findings. In this study we aim to evaluate impact of imaging center as an indicator of image quality on accuracy of MRI reports in diagnosis of rotator cuff tendon pathologies. Methods: We re...
